Original Design: Uncovering the Real You
Original Design—unearthing the real you
“So God created man in his own image,
In the image of God he created him;
Male and female he created them….
God saw all that he had made and behold it was very good.”
According to the word of God, each one of us is created in the image of God. This means that everyone that has walked, is walking, and will ever walk this earth carries a piece of God’s heart, his personality, and his passions. Humanity was not only created in the image of God, but God called his creation of man and woman very good. Basically, after God created man and woman in his own image, he smiled upon them and saw beauty and prosperity and goodness, and he was well pleased with his creation.
Each one of us carries something good—a unique expression that reflects our heavenly father. This is our original design, which is the core of each of our beings. Each one of us is responsible for understanding and believing who we are – the original, good, pleasing, and beautiful things God has placed inside of us, so that we don’t get tripped up believing lies about ourselves, which slow us down and cover up the good inside.
Throughout high school and college I struggled with self-hatred and didn’t believe there was anything good inside of me. The lies I believed about my giftings and abilities prevented much of my ability to be myself. This led to unhealthy desires of wanting to be someone I wasn’t, which resulted in shallow relationships and even greater self-hatred. This resulted because individuals could read through my lack of authenticity - making it difficult to be my friend. In hindsight, I realize that I wasted so much time believing lies and thinking about myself, as I was constantly worrying about whether people liked me or not. Because I was so focused on what others thought, I wasn’t free to love others. The scriptures say, “…love your neighbor as yourself.” If we don’t love ourselves, it is impossible to love others.
Though at the time I didn’t believe there was anything good in me, I now know that everyone is uniquely wired and has a unique purpose for their life. God thought each one of us up and created us anew in Christ so that we can walk in the fullness of all he has planned for us to do (Ephesians 2:10). Though this is true, not everyone will walk into the fullness of their identity and purpose. So, what is it then, that keeps an individual from walking in their fullness?
The book of Peter describes the enemy as a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. John 10:10 talks about how the enemy has come to steal, kill, and destroy individuals. This does not only mean to literally kill unto death, steal physical possessions from, or literally destroy, but also refers to individual identity, destiny, and call. The enemy has come to steal the truth of who we are as sons and daughters and what we carry. He has come to kill our purpose for why God created us. He has come to destroy and lie to us and make us think we are nothing important.
I would like to briefly explain several ways that the enemy attempts to kill, steal, and destroy from humanity. It is important to be aware of the enemy’s tactics so that we know how to stand firm against him. As a Christ follower, we have all power and authority over the demonic, so let’s be on guard (1 Peter 5:8), stand against him (Ephesians 6:11), and win when fiery arrows of lies are thrown our way (Ephesians 6:16).
Listed below are ways the enemy plants lies in individual minds:
First, the demonic can directly whisper lies into individual minds. Second, because we live in a fallen world, traumatic events and experiences happen, which the enemy can use to birth lies. Thirdly, because man has freewill, humans can act, do, and say the things they want. The enemy will use the hurtful words or hurtful things done to them to convince them that those words are truth (this is not a comprehensive list).
I would also like to mention, that whenever we hear a lie or a negative thought, this does not mean it is always the demonic whispering the untruth directly into our ear. A lot of times, the enemy will whisper a lie once and then from that place, people will choose to believe the lie, creating a negative neural pathway in the brain. The more we think a certain thought, the thicker that neural connection gets, and the thicker the connection, the quicker your mind will think that thought. At this point, the enemy is hand’s off. He has you believing the lie on your own and he doesn’t need to whisper it anymore.
Though it is important to be aware of how the enemy is at work in our minds, it is even more important to know what God is doing. Praise the Lord that he leads us into all truth and that he has given us his word and his Holy Spirit to speak to us directly. I know a lot of Christ followers are unaware that they can hear the voice of the Lord, but you can! It is a spiritual muscle that we need to practice regularly. I will be writing a future blog post on how to hear God’s voice for your daily personal lives. It is so important for Christ followers to know that God wants to speak to us more than we want to hear him.
The Lord has taken me through a lot of healing and continues to teach me how to renew my mind to see myself how he sees me. There are lots of things that I hated about myself that I now love. This is because I have learned how to hear his voice and hear from him directly why he has created me, and what he has placed inside of me that is parallel with his heart. When we ask him why he has created us, he always answers. He wants us to discover his masterpiece more than we want to discover ourselves.
In conclusion, there is no time to waste believing lies about ourselves. Because that is all they are… LIES! Really think about this for a moment. Any negative thought we have about ourselves is untrue. We just need to be diligent in renewing our minds by noticing, naming lies, and nurturing the truth. Each one of us was created in the image of God and has an original design that reflects a piece of Him. This means we are good, pleasing, beautiful, and purposeful masterpieces. Let us courageously face the lies that so easily tangle us up, get rid of them, and partner with the truth to uncover the real you.
Prayer: God, I thank you that I am uniquely and wonderfully made. Oh how marvelous are your works in me! God, what are the good things that you have placed inside of me? What are the things inside of me that reflect you and who you are (take a minute to listen to what he says. The first thing that comes to mind is usually the Holy Spirit speaking to you!). Father, I ask that you show me the areas in my life that I need to renew my mind to come under the truth regarding who I am and how I see myself. Teach me how to renew my mind in this area. I want to see myself the way you see me. Amen.
